The audience change
Before
The reader assumes every incoming opportunity needs a response.
After
The reader can distinguish a qualifying opportunity from one that should receive no action.
A fictional volunteer craft desk receives requests for project advice. It proposes responding only when it can add a relevant, reliable suggestion within its agreed remit.
Fictional teaching scenario, not observed results or an approved operating plan. This is not an emergency or mandatory-response service. No system, staffing assignment or service-level agreement is represented as operating.
What carries the story
Headline: Respond when the contribution is useful.
Substance: The instruction evaluates value before format, and makes doing nothing visibly part of the process rather than an accidental omission.
Closing beat: No useful contribution means no response.
Copy says: Checking contribution before selecting a response prevents activity from becoming an end in itself.
The diagram adds: One shared question governs two labelled outcome columns. Response methods appear only within Yes, with an explicit choose-one instruction.
Together: The reader can distinguish a qualifying opportunity from one that should receive no action.
Place it in an argument
Establish first: Define the purpose of the service and the requests within its remit.
Then: For a qualifying request, choose one appropriate response and assign responsibility.
Possible next headline: For a qualifying request, choose one response and assign an owner.
Conditional route: If the gate is not satisfied, stop the response path. Reassess only when materially new information changes the contribution.
Choose this treatment deliberately
Conditional-table variation of S58: a single governing criterion and explicit No/Yes outcome columns. It is not the default package comparison or a reproduction of source geometry.
Alternative: S73 Step rows Makes process order explicit but does not encode a gate. A branching process would need a separately reviewed composition, not a fill of its linear rows.
Two fixed outcomes; the repeatable count is response methods inside Yes.
Required evidence
- A stated definition of useful contribution.
- An accountable person or team to make the judgment.
- The available response methods and the limits of each.
Must survive
- The gate precedes the choice of response.
- No action is a valid explicit outcome.
- Alternative response methods are not cumulative commitments.
- The existence of a monitoring concept does not prove an installed system.
A poor fit when
- Mandatory reporting or emergency procedures where silence is not allowed.
- A checkbox score that disguises a judgment call.
- Guaranteed service promises without capacity or ownership.
